E-bike battery care: tips to make it last longer
Original charger, heat, storage and warning signs: how to care for your e-bike battery and when to take it to the Soma Sports workshop.

To make your e-bike battery last longer, always use the original charger, charge it in a dry, ventilated place away from excessive heat, and do not leave the battery fully drained for long periods. Above all, follow the manufacturer's manual. If the battery gets too hot, swells, smells burnt or stops charging, stop using it and take the e-bike to the Soma Sports workshop in Carpina, Pernambuco (Brazil) for an assessment.
The battery is the heart of an e-bike: it decides how far you go and how much the bike helps on climbs. With a few simple habits you keep its performance for longer and avoid surprises halfway through the ride, whether on your daily commute in Carpina and the Mata Norte region or on the weekend ride.
How to charge your e-bike battery the right way
- Always use the original charger. It was made for your bike's battery. Do not improvise with a charger from another model.
- Charge in a dry, ventilated place. Avoid charging in the sun, near heat sources or in damp places.
- Follow the manufacturer's manual. Each brand has its own guidance on charging and storage, and it outweighs any general rule.
- Keep an eye on it while charging. If you notice unusual heat or a strange smell, unplug it.
A removable battery makes life easier
On many models the battery comes off the bike. On the Oggi Big Wheel 8.2, for example, it is integrated and removable in the down tube; the YOO Fleek has a removable battery that charges from any outlet. That lets you charge indoors even when the bike stays in the garage. Remove and insert the battery carefully, without forcing the contacts.
Heat, rain and storage
In Pernambuco, heat is the main concern. Leaving the e-bike parked for hours under strong sun exposes the battery to the excessive heat manufacturers ask you to avoid. Whenever you can, park in the shade and store the bike in a covered, dry place.
For rain and washing, follow what the manual says for your model. After riding on a wet day, dry the bike before putting it away.
E-bike unused for a long time
If you are traveling or will go a while without riding, do not store the battery fully drained. Check the manual for the recommended way to store it and, if the bike has been parked for a long time, a tune-up before riding again is worthwhile.
How to make each charge go further
The range stated by the manufacturer is the maximum and, in practice, it is usually lower. It varies with rider weight, terrain, wind and, above all, the assist level. A few habits help the battery go further:
- Use the assist strategically. Save the higher levels for climbs and turn it down on the flat. With less assist, the motor pulls less and you pedal more, which also becomes a workout.
- Inflate the tires to the pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Underinflated tires make pedaling heavier.
- Keep the chain clean and lubricated. A dirty or dry drivetrain steals efficiency.
- Plan your route. Knowing the round-trip distance keeps you from running out of charge halfway.

Signs the battery needs an assessment
Some signs mean it is time to stop riding and visit the workshop:
- the battery gets very hot, while riding or charging;
- the battery is swollen or its casing is deformed;
- a burning smell;
- the battery has stopped charging.
In these cases, do not try to open or repair the battery at home. The Soma Sports workshop diagnoses batteries, motors and displays, done by people who sell and know electric bikes. For the rest of the bike, such as brakes, tires and chain, see our post on basic bike maintenance at home.
