Kids' bike wheel size by age: how to choose the right fit

12, 16, 20 or 24-inch? See the age reference, the saddle test and tips from Soma Sports, in Carpina, Brazil, to choose the right kids' bike.

A kids' bike wheel size is chosen by the child's height and age. As a general reference, a 12-inch wheel fits children of about 2 to 4 years old, 16-inch from 4 to 6, 20-inch from 6 to 9 and 24-inch from 9 to 12. At Soma Sports, in Carpina, Pernambuco (Brazil), the team checks the brand's size chart for the chosen model and, whenever possible, the child tries the bike in the store before buying.

This chart is a starting point, not a fixed rule. Two children of the same age can have very different heights, and each manufacturer designs its frames in its own way. That is why the test with the child sitting on the saddle matters more than any number. Below, we explain how to use the chart, how to do this test and what else to look at when choosing the right bike for the little ones.

Which kids' bike wheel size for each age?

The general reference we use in the store, the same one in our buying guide, is:

    • 12-inch wheel: about 2 to 4 years old.
    • 16-inch wheel: about 4 to 6 years old.
    • 20-inch wheel: about 6 to 9 years old.
    • 24-inch wheel: about 9 to 12 years old.

The store also has 26-inch bikes, besides adult models. For older children and teenagers, moving up to these sizes depends mainly on height and on the brand's chart, and the team helps you work it out with the child present.

    Why age is not enough

Age is only a clue. What defines whether the bike is the right size is the relationship between the child's body and the frame: saddle height, reach to the handlebar and how easily the feet touch the ground. A bike that is too big makes the child insecure and hard to control; one that is too small is uncomfortable and soon needs replacing.

How do you know the bike is the right size?

The simplest test is done with the child sitting on the saddle. They should reach the ground with the tips of their toes. Also check a few points:

    • The hands reach the handlebar and the brake levers without overstretching the arms.
    • The child can get on and off the bike alone, without losing balance.
    • They steer easily at low speed.
    • They feel confident. If they seem scared on the very first lap, try another size.

That is why we recommend bringing the child to the store. Trying the bike on the spot avoids buying blind and lets us adjust the saddle and handlebar to their size.

Balance bike, training wheels or a regular bike?

The first bike does not have to be the same for everyone. At Soma Sports, three paths for the little ones come up often:

    Balance bike (no pedals)

A 12-inch balance bike, like the TSW Motion Balance, has no pedals. The child moves by pushing with their feet and learns to find their own center of gravity, gaining confidence and coordination for the next stage.

    12-inch bike with training wheels

12-inch bikes with training wheels are a classic option for the first rides. Light and sturdy, they help the child get used to pedaling and braking before riding on two wheels only.

Bigger wheels: 20 and 24 inches

As the child grows, 20-inch and 24-inch wheels bring bigger frames and, on some models, an aluminum frame and Shimano components. This is the stage when they ride more independently and can join longer rides with the family.

See the models and brands available at the store on the kids' bikes page.

Helmet and safety from the very first ride

The helmet should come with the bike from day one. It is chosen by head circumference, measured with a tape about 2 cm above the eyebrows. On the head, it must feel snug, without squeezing or wobbling, covering the forehead, with the buckle adjusted. You will find kids' helmets and other safety items in helmets and accessories.

    Other simple everyday tips:

    • Choose safe places without traffic for the first practice sessions, such as squares and leisure areas.
    • Ride along and stay close while the child gains confidence.
    • Check that the tires are inflated and the brakes work before heading out. For that, see our post on basic bike maintenance at home.

    Perguntas frequentes

What is the right wheel size for a 5-year-old?

By the general reference, children aged 4 to 6 usually ride a 16-inch wheel. The test confirms it: sitting on the saddle, the child should reach the ground with the tips of their toes.

Is it worth buying a bigger bike so it lasts longer?

It is not recommended. A bike that is too big makes the child insecure and hard to control. It is best to choose the right size for their current height.

Balance bike or training wheels: which comes first?

Both work. The balance bike, without pedals, teaches the child to balance; the 12-inch bike with training wheels helps them get used to pedaling and braking. The store team helps you decide based on the child's age and personality.

Where can I buy a kids' bike in Carpina?
